In this video, we review for the NCLEX exam by discussing Hyperparathyroidism versus Hypoparathyroidism.

Hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism are conditions of the parathyroid glands. These parathyroid glands can be found at the back of the thyroid gland and are primarily responsible for the management and control of blood calcium. Hyperparathyroidism is an overactive parathyroid gland. On the other hand, hypoparathyroidism is an underactive parathyroid gland.

Pathophysiology

Parathyroid glands regulate calcium in the blood. The parathyroid hormone (PTH) can also be an acronym for Puts The calcium High, which is a great way to remember PTH’s function. The negative feedback loop is also explained in this video. Calcium is increased in the blood by three ways; we call it R-I-B.

In hyperparathyroidism, there is increased PTH which correlates with too much blood calcium. When this happens, the patient will experience stones, moans, and groans. What do these mean?
